Sierra 1500 Preview

The 2027 model year promises to be a significant one for GMC, as the company will kick off the sixth generation of the Sierra 1500 pickup. In addition to an all-new outer design and a reworked interior with an available 60 inches of combined digital display area, GMC’s best-selling vehicle will be offered with two new small-block V8 engines. The hierarchy of trims will stay in familiar territory with the Pro, Elevation, AT4, and Denali, along with the AT4X, GMC’s most capable off-road pickup, and the Denali Ultimate, which redefines luxury in the truck realm. An example of that level of luxury is the Bose headrest speakers that are available on the most expensive Sierras as a class-exclusive amenity.

As of this writing, GMC had yet to release detailed capability specifications (e.g., maximum towing and payload ratings) for the redesigned Sierra. Read on for a summary of what we know so far about the upcoming ’27 Sierra 1500.

Powertrains

The biggest under-the-hood news is the debut of two sixth-generation small-block V8s. GMC will replace the current gasoline eight-cylinders with new 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter powerplants that have been engineered for greater performance, additional refinement, and increased efficiency. Their enhanced power delivery comes from revision of the combustion, cooling, fuel injection, and control systems.

The TurboMax four-cylinder, with the best standard torque in its class, will continue as the Sierra’s base engine. GMC is also carrying over the 3.0-liter Duramax, GM’s class-exclusive diesel offering. All Sierra 1500 engines will pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Design and Exterior Details

While the 2027 Sierra 1500 has an unmistakable GMC profile, it features a redesigned exterior with an upright stance, a more prominent grille, updated lighting, and trim-specific accents. There are more subtle touches, including new welcome and farewell lighting animations.

The off-road editions will receive additional upgrades. The AT4X returns with a factory two-inch suspension lift, front and rear electronic locking differentials, Multimatic Jounce Control dampers, and the Sierra's first factory-equipped 35-inch mud-terrain tires. Buyers seeking even greater trail capability will once again have the option to add the AEV Edition package.

Interior Space

The Sierra's cabin will be completely redesigned, with GMC emphasizing premium materials and technology. Every trim will have a new dashboard layout, but the higher trims will also get upscale details such as real wood trim, exclusive interior color combinations, and an available panoramic sunroof.

Practicality will take priority as well. GMC has developed a new MultiPro center console that expands storage space while also creating a larger work surface for those who use their truck for business. The Crew Cab models will continue to offer generous passenger accommodations – with best-in-class standard front headroom and legroom, according to GMC.

Safety and Technology

Technology will take a significant leap forward in the 2027 Sierra. Every trim will have a 16.3-inch center display and a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster, with higher trims eligible for a 15-inch head-up display, an 11.5-inch passenger display, and an 8.5-inch digital rear camera mirror.

Super Cruise hands-free driving technology with trailering assistance will be offered on more trims than before, becoming standard on the AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate while remaining available on the Elevation. GMC promises several new standard driver-assistance features for 2027, including Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, Side Bicyclist Alert, and Reverse Automatic Braking. Other safety technologies that should certainly be standard include adaptive cruise control, Blind Zone Steering Assist, rear cross-traffic braking, and front and rear parking sensors.
